About Chest Pain

Understanding chest pain

Chest pain has many possible causes, ranging from the heart and blood vessels to the lungs, digestive system, or musculoskeletal system. While not all chest pain is serious, it is a symptom that always warrants proper assessment — particularly if it is new, recurrent, brought on by exertion, or associated with other symptoms.

Dr Kamal Khan is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist with over twenty years of experience assessing chest pain. He takes a structured, thorough approach to identify or rule out a cardiac cause, giving you clear answers and a clear plan.

What we assess

Possible causes we investigate

Coronary artery disease — narrowing of the arteries supplying the heart, which can cause angina
Arrhythmia-related pain — chest discomfort linked to an irregular heart rhythm
Valve or structural heart conditions — identified through echocardiography
Pericarditis — inflammation of the lining around the heart
Non-cardiac causes — such as musculoskeletal pain or acid reflux, which Dr Khan can help distinguish from cardiac symptoms

Your visit

What happens at your appointment

At your first consultation, Dr Khan will take a detailed history of your symptoms — including when they occur, how long they last, and what brings them on or relieves them — alongside a physical examination and review of your cardiovascular risk factors.

Where appropriate, an ECG can often be performed and reviewed the same day. If further investigation is needed, this is usually arranged promptly at the same hospital, and Dr Khan will explain the findings and next steps clearly at every stage.
